Biology Project Files for the Mac/PC

Listed below are the abstracts and links for downloading the biology software created by Jim Ekstrom, and his biology classes at Phillips Exeter Academy

The programs are FREE for distribution and the author welcomes suggestions for repairs and improvements.

Each program link will supply you with a file that can uncompressed. This file will contain the executable and associated documentation file which can be accessed for on-screen help, edited or printed with your word processor. To download the file, click on the appropriate link. You will need to download the file(s) onto your hard drive. You will also need a copy of HyperStudio Player for all of the files. You may download that here if needed.

Venus Flytrap (780K)MACVenus FlyTrap (810K)WIN A color image under the light microscope showing a venus flytrap leaf with several "trigger" hairs surrounding a recent meal. There are also several SEM images and the beginnings of a student exercise. PREVIEW

Owl Pellets (3.5MB)MACOwl Pellets (3.4MB)WIN A not uncommon project that involves investigating owl pellets. It is presented in hyperstudio and does a particularly good job showing images of the student's findings as well as general background on owls and their prey. Well outlined and organized. PREVIEW

Cactus (1.1MB)MACCactus (1.2MB)WIN A study of different cactus plants and how they are identified. There is an examination of their spines -- and crystals --under light and scanning electron microscopy. PREVIEW

Diatoms (944K)MACDiatoms (918K)WIN An examination of the different types of diatoms. Their structure and physiology as well as economic importance is investigated. Specific examples from the local estuary are shown under the light and scanning electron microscope. PREVIEW

Mitosis (1.9MB)MACMitosis (1.9MB)WIN A 3-D Quicktime movie showing mitosis produced by Jason Arnold as a class assignment. PREVIEW

The following is a presentation produced by students in Anatomy and Physiology

Digestion (796K)MACDigestion (830K)WIN A hyperstudio tutorial on digestion -- somewhat tongue in cheek -- designed to be presented to a young audience. PREVIEW

The following are biology project suggestions.

Ecology Analysis (122K)MACEcology Analysis (145K)WIN Using NIH Image/PC Image as a data display device for project work in ecology. A theoretical project is examined in this exercise. PREVIEW

JPEG Images (39Kb) Acrobat Player Format How to take JPEG images from WEB sites and digital cameras and how to analyze them. Converting suggestions are also discussed for this image format. PREVIEW

Digital Camera (80Kb) Acrobat Player Format Digital camera use in microphotography and in copying 35mm. slides. PREVIEW

Colonizing: Adobe File (144K ) Acrobat Player Format This Adobe Acrobat file shows a series of steps that can be used to "colorize" grayscale images.

Slicing for Biology(157K ) Acrobat Player Format This Adobe Acrobat file is a NSTA reprint from the February, 2001 The Science Teacher. The article describes how density slicing can be effectively used to evaluate a number of biological and general science images.
