Santiago or James island was formed thought the merging of two volcanoes coming from independent melting zones in the mantle. The island is also one of the most active volcanically. The image below shows the ropey pahoehoe lava overlying some of the older more angular aa flows. Pahoehoe flows occur when there is a relatively low magma discharge over a gentle slope. The aa flows are generally large and occur on steep slopes.
