The example that was examined came from the eruption that occurred on the island of Heimaey in 1973. Heimaey lies about 6 miles south of the SSW corner of Iceland.

The spreading rift zone in this area may have produced this volcanic activity. The output took the form of lava flows and tephra. The lava partially engulfed the town while the tephra or pyroclastic fragments left huge deposits that buried or collapsed buildings.
