The fruit fly Drosophila continues to be used extensively in genetic studies. It is possible to culture large number of individuals in the laboratory and have a new generation appearing every 10 - 12 days. This contrasts dramatically with the relative difficulty and length of time it took Mendel to produce his results with pea plants.
