Pollen

The flower shown below was recently discovered in New Jersey by paleobotanists from Cornell University. This is only one of some 200 charcoal species that are preserved, in some cases, right down to the cellular level. What is particularly exciting about these plants is that they push the appearance of flowering plants or Angiosperms back almost 30 million years to an origin of 90 million years ago. Preserved with many of the examples are the insect pollinators that evolved with the plants.
