The puffball mushroom shown above was originally a brilliant white globe only several inches in diameter. (However a giant puffball, even larger than this, may be up to 2 feet in diameter and weigh over four pounds.) The mushroom shown above represents the fruiting body of a great tangle of white threads or mycelium that spread under the ground. (In this respect it is like other mushrooms.)
