In the above view you are looking at a the upper left quarter of a corroded iron washer. Iron on exposure to moist air reacts with oxygen to form rust. While this is chemically a very complex process, essentially the iron is being oxidized to ferric oxide. This compound then combines with varying amounts of water. The color of the resulting rust varies with the amount of water combining with the original iron.
