The secret of the Water Strider's success in hunting it's prey is surface tension. Beneath the surface each water molecule is strongly attracted to adjoining molecules. The molecular cohesiveness causes the surface film to be as small as possible and to behave as if it were an elastic film. This allows the striders to race over the film and make it that much harder for this biologist to capture them for immortality.
