Museum of Science - Biotechnology

Listed below are the abstracts and links for the material that was used in the 2001 Biotechnology Workshop

The principal site for Imaging software and file downloads is the Center for Image Processing for Educators (CIPE)

Information on How to obtain images can be found at the following site.

A very common laboratory exercise in biology involving the examination of the fresh water plant Elodea. This article appeared in the January 2000 issue of the NSTA "The Science Teacher".

Density Slicing is an important tool in imaging technology. It can be of great assistance in student projects. This article appeared in the February 2001 issue of the NSTA "The Science Teacher".

Animal Hands An introductory lesson that can be downloaded from HIP¨ Biology 1. Students use image processing to examine x-rays of hands, wings, hooves and flippers to compare their structures and functions. Image processing allows them to change the way the information contained in the x-rays is displayed. They use a variety of techniques to study the detail in the images. (This is a particularly good exercise to start your imaging experience.)

Animal Hands can also be performed on the Internet at this site using an applet called ImageJ.

Biotechnology

(ImageJ Internet Exercises)

Gel Analysis is an introductory biotechnology exercise. It is designed to acquaint teachers on how to photograph gels and then subsequently calibrate these gels for analysis.

Gel Electrophoresis is a lesson from Biotechnologist. In the lesson, students explore a series of images showing the techniques and concepts involved in separating molecules by size in an electric field. Then, the students analyze an actual movie of DNA molecules moving through an agarose gel.
