"Ugly Bug" Results 2
![]() |
These "Ugly Bug"
results make use of the applet version of an application called ImageJ. This
version should shortly be running in a separate "ImageJ" window. The download
will take a few seconds with an Ethernet connection or about two minutes using
a 28.8 modem. Quit ImageJ by clicking on the "ImageJ" window's close button.
When you go to the Windows version of one of the exercises below the ImageJ
application will remain running in the background.
(NOTE: ImageJ opens up without any problems using either Netscape of Internet Explorer on Windows. Internet Explorer 4.5 and above works fine on the Macintosh, but there is no Netscape support at this time on the Macintosh. If you wish to download a version of ImageJ to your computer's hard drive so you can evaluate your own images a download can be obtained at the following site.
When you view an image with ImageJ you will have three windows open at a time (the WEB page, ImageJ and at least one image) so you may want to go to your control panel on your computer and change the monitor size so that you can readily move between the different windows.
Measuring using ImageJ
Go to File, Open Samples and open your image. This is a view that was photographed with a SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) and has a measurement (micron) bar with it. Having a micron bar in any image makes it possible to calibrate the image.
Use your
Magnifying Tool
and click on the micron scale This will enlarge your view.
(To go back hold down the Option key and click)
Take your Straight
Line
Tool
and click on the left side of this scale and draw the line to
the right side. Go up to Analyze, and click on Measure.
Now go to Analyze, Set Measurements and the only box
selected should be perimeter. Click OK and then go to Analyze,
Set Scale. (You
will probably have a reading of so many pixels) Enter
whatever number is below your micron bar for known distance.
Put microns. In the Unit of Measurement box. Click OK
(If you have further questions about this you can go to Open Samples in ImageJ
and open the file Calibrate Distance)
LIGHT MICROSCOPE Views from the participating schools
