Science Teaching At Exeter
During 1994-95, Exeter's science teachers embarked on curricular revision
designed to take the department into the 21st century. The entire department
has contributed to the development of a curriculum that emphasizes hands-on,
experiential learning. Currently classes are small, 14 students maximum,
providing ample opportunity for student/teacher interaction and for frequent
laboratory investigations ranging from short exercises illustrating a specific
point to more complex experiments that may require several class periods
to complete. In the fall of 2001, the academy completed construction of
the Phelps Science
Center. The science program itself, as well as continual input
from science faculty was integral to the design of the building, especially
the teaching spaces. Each classroom includes laboratory space and
a large harkness
table, so that teacher and student can move easily between class discussion
and experiments that augment the class discussion. Teachers in the three
major disciplines of science, biology, chemistry and physics, meet regularly
to plan and to share ideas. Wherever it is appropriate, technology is used
to support our teaching goals. Microcomputer based laboratory experiments
have been introduced at all levels. A campus-wide computer network allows
students to share experimental results and to communicate with faculty
members outside the classroom. In addition to the 20 teachers in the department,
there are three technicians responsible for setting up and tearing down
experiments and for purchasing, storing and maintaining equipment. While
students need only take two years of science to meet the Exeter diploma
requirement, most take courses well beyond that minimum.
