Record 2-2
This was a Huge win for Big Red Volleyball. The odds were against us coming into the
game - we just dropped 2 disappointing matches, middle blocker Monica Jain was
injured, and we were facing the defending league champs. The girls played their hearts
out and got their game together in a spectacular way. There were some bumps along
the way, however. We started out the first game basically trading sideouts until senior
setter Soo Roh put together an 8 point serving streak, including 5 aces. Kate Kelly
followed with 5 points and three aces of her own. It looked like Choate wasn't able to
handle our serving and we took a 24-10 run. Then our serve receive collapsed, allowing
Choate right back into the match. Following 9 point and 5 point Choate runs, we
escaped with a 30-26 win. Choate was fired up by the comeback, however, and took
an early lead in the second game. They got their serve receive together, played tough
defense, and found some holes on our side. We played close, to 22-23, when Choate
scored 6 straight points, making it 29-22. A Choate missed serve put Lucy Abell
on the service line. Lucy started by firing 3 straight aces. Sparked by the possibility
of a comeback, our offense and defense pulled it together to win the next 5 points to
take the game 31-29. Following that disappointment, Choate couldn't regain their
intensity and we took the third game by a score of 30-17. Abby Wakefield and Olivia
Lenson (subbing for Monica Jain) had big days defensively in the middle. Kinsley
Makielski had a personal best 6 kills on the day, hitting from the right side. The back
row trio of Lucy Abell, Kate Kelly, and Natasha Meyer refused to let balls land and
controlled the tempo of the game. Setters Soo Roh and Cindy Teng played great,
distributing balls to all the hitters.
