Congrats to Captains Elect Abby Abisinito, Liana Bonavita, and Eva Glasrud
Congrats to All-Stars Roxane Duka, Maddy Hartzell, and Eva Glasrud
Sept. 17 PEA 3 Cushing 0 (30-20, 30-27, 30-26) Stats
Big Red Volleyball began the season with a three game win over Cushing Academy. Middle hitter Eva Glasrud set the pace with 11 kills. Senior co-captain Maddy Hartzell dominated from the service line, scoring 22 points across several streaks. The defense looked good and we outlasted Cushing on some long points.
Sept. 20 PEA 2 NMH 0 (30-26, 30-23) Stats
Exeter looked confident against an NMH team that was strong defensively. We had little trouble siding out, with only one NMH server scoring three consecutive points against us. Upper Eva Glasrud continues to lead in kills, recording 11 in a two game match. Strong serving by Liana Bonavita, Paula Canahuati, and Maddy Hartzell helped seal the victory.
Sept. 20 PEA 0 Hotchkiss 2 (21-30, 24-30) Stats
PEA played well against a Hotchkiss team with several offensive weapons and a defense that wouldn't let balls drop. A solid serve receive, led by Senior co-captain Roxane Duka, gave us plenty of offensive opportunities. Despite strong hitting, we were unable to find holes and record kills. Eva Glasrud and Paula Canahuati recorded some big stuff blocks which led to important points. Agressive serving by Upper Abby Abisinito also led to many points. However, Hotchkiss found our defensive holes and overcame a 20-15 Exeter lead in the second game.
Sept. 28 PEA 0 Choate 2 (16-30, 23-30) Stats
Exeter never got into an offensive rhythm against a Choate team that capitalized on every mistake. Choate's powerful offense kept us on our heals and forced poor passes. With sets coming from the middle of the court, our hitters weren't able to get good swings, resulting in only 11 kills on the day. More aggressive serving in the second game allowed us to put some points on the board.
Sept. 28 PEA 2 St. Pauls 0 (30-20, 30-14) Stats
Shrugging off the loss to Choate, the Exeter girls regained their confidence and came out strong against St. Pauls. Abby Abisinito began the game with 4 straight aces and 7 straight points. Senior Paola Canahuati led the team in kills, with 8. The passing was excellent and we got offensive production from all positions. Everyone on the team was able to participate in the victory.
Oct. 1 PEA 3 New Hampton 1 (30-21, 18-30, 30-19, 30-27) Stats
Traveling to the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, Exeter took on the 4-1 New Hampton squad for the first ever varsity match between the schools. New Hampton was ready for us, with some hard hitters and hard servers. Exeter jumped out to an early lead on Liana Bonavita's serving. Some accurate tipping found holes in the New Hampton defense and forced errors. We cruised to a an easy first game win. New Hampton came out tough in the second game and found holes in our defense. The result was an easy win for them. The third game was back in our favor, with Paola Canahuati scoring on her serves and hits and Eva Glasrud making some critical blocks. Another easy win for Exeter. The fourth game provided some excitement, with both teams playing good volleyball. Great defense on both sides led to long rallies, as each team dug spike after spike. Down 19-25, Exeter called a time-out, sided out, and got back into the game with great serving and never-quit defense. Great win.
Oct. 4 PEA 3 Loomis-Chaffee 1 (30-24, 24-30, 30-10, 30-20) Stats
Big Red volleyball improved its record to 5-2 in an unusual win in the brand new gymnasium at Loomis-Chaffee. The first game went smoothly, with solid all-around play. Exeter kept Loomis on their heels and didn't give them many scoring opportunities. The second game was very sloppy., with each team missing serves. With 5 of our first 7 service opportunities missing the court, we quickly fell behind by 11 points. The Loomis girls gained confidence and started attacking better. We did manage to regain our composure by the end of the game, and we adjusted our defense to cover the Loomis attacks. The third game looked like it was going to be a good volleyball contest, but the Loomis setter suffered a head injury early in the game. Without her, Loomis was out of sync and we won easily. She returned for the 4th game, but it was clear that Loomis couldn't mount a challenge.to come back from the 2-1 deficit.
Oct. 11 PEA 3 NMH 0 (30-26, 30-22, 30-15) Stats
In front of a Parents' Weekend crowd, PEA had a slow start against a much improved NMH team. The offense wasn't quite clicking in the beginning, but we played tough defense and edged NMH in the first game. In the second game, we got into an offensive rhythm, primarily by setting the ball to Eva Glasrud in the middle. Seven straight service points by Paola Canahuati gave us the lead we needed. By the third game, we had tired out the NMH defense. We finished the match with 10 straight points on Masi Rooke's serves. Masi had a great day at the net, as well, with 5 kills and three stuffs. Maddy Hartzell played one of her best matches, ending with 7 kills and some point saving digs.
Oct. 15 PEA 0 Andover 3 (23-30, 26-30, 21-30) Stats
Despite a well-played match, Exeter was unable to come up with a win against a powerful undefeated Andover squad. We stayed close in all three games, even gaining a six point lead early in the second and third games, but each time we got to 20 points, Andover got its act together and stopped us. Amazing digging by Roxanne Duka, Abby Abisinito, and Liana Bonavita frustrated the Andover offense. Ultimately, they were able to find holes, however. We also returned serve well, neutralizing the Andover jump servers. The good news is that we learned that we can beat this Andover team, but that will have to wait until November 8th.
Oct. 18 PEA 3 Deer?eld 1 (19-30, 30-11, 30-16, 30-21) Stats
It was a slow start for us, resulting in 6 aces and lots of miscommunication. We got our act together in the second game and won confidently. Four servers, Maddy Hartzell, Abby Abisinito, Liana Bonavita, and Paula Canahuati, each had over to points from the service line.
Oct. 22 PEA 3 New Hampton 0 (30-24, 30-28, 30-11) Stats
In one of our best played matches of the season, PEA beat New Hampton in 3 straight. The first game was close until Emma Marwood, substituting for an injured Paola Canahuati, served four straight points to give us a lead. We fell behind in the second game, as New Hampton started playing tougher defense and mistake-free volleyball. Down 17-23, we mounted an attack. With 4 stuff blocks from Eva Glasrud and a "refuse to let the ball hit the floor" attitude, we came back to win 30-28. In the third game we played with a confidence that this team hasn't shown before. Passes were accurate, sets were excellent, and our hits found the holes. It was clear that no ball was going to land on our side. Liana Bonavita, Eva Glasrud, and Maddy Hartzell made some great reaction plays on help balls. We cruiesed to a 30-11 win.
Oct. 25 PEA 3 St. Paul’s 0 (30-16, 30-16, 30-22) Stats
Despite sluggish movement and mediocre passing, PEA was able to boost its record to 9-3 against a struggling St. Paul's team. Poor passing led to lots of sets off the net. Fortunately, we were able to convert those to points by using well-placed down balls and off-speed hits. Liana Bonavita led the team with 27 service points, including a season-best streak of 12 straight in the second game. Eva Glasrud recorded 9 stuff blocks in order to surpass Tei Carpenter's record off 56 stuff blocks in a single season. Eva now has 62 and has at least 3 matches to go!
Oct. 29 PEA 3 Cushing 0 (30-16, 30 - 14, 30-20) Stats
In the final match before Andover, PEA played strong against Cushing. While our service return passing wasn't great, we only allowed two aces. Keeping the ball in play, we were able to side out effectively, giving up only seven service points in the first two games combined. The defense was strong and the offense found holes. 18 services aces also helped the winning effort. Lower Kinsley Makielski substituted for an injured Maddy Hartzell and played well.
Nov. 8 PEA 2 Andover 3 (30-20, 22-30, 20-30, 30-17, 13-15) Stats
This match never fails to provide excitement - four out of the last five matches on Exeter-Andover day have lasted 5 games. In exactly the opposite situation from last year, Andover entered the match undefeated (having only lost 1 game in a match all season) and Exeter was the underdog. Both teams played exceptional volleyball. Andover played a power game, Exeter played scrappy defense, hit well, and refused to lose points. None of the first four games were terribly close, as the team with the early lead held on to win. The fifth game remained close with no server for either team putting together more than two points. Unfortunately we ended up on the short end, but the performance by our team and the effort they put into the match was memorable.
Nov. 12 PEA 1 Hotchkiss 3 (26-30, 30-26, 14-30, 24-30) Stats
After losing the first six points, Exeter started playing
hard and stayed even with Hotchkiss for the remainder of the first game.
Hotchkiss' defense picked up all but our best hits and we had to work hard
to find open spots. With good passes in the second game, we managed to
find those spots. Weak passing in the third game led to a blowout. The
fourth game was very even, with both teams siding out well. Each team had
only scored 5 service points when the score was tied at 21. Hotchkiss put
together 2 service runs to pull ahead and win it. Eva Glasrud played an
outstanding match at the net, recording 22 stuff blocks, eclipsing Caroline
Closmore's previous single match total of 15 (which was set in a 5-game
match). Unfortunately, the scrappy Hotchkiss team picked up a lot of those
balls.
